Tanzania

The Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, then Zanzibar.

Why Tanzania

Tanzania has Africa's best-known parks and hosts the wildebeest migration for most of the year.

End on Zanzibar. It is a majority-Muslim island, so halal food and the call to prayer are part of daily life, and the beaches are a short drive from Stone Town.

What to see

Serengeti

The migration moves through the park most of the year. Calving in the south runs roughly January to March.

Ngorongoro Crater

A vast volcanic crater with wildlife on its floor, including black rhino.

Zanzibar Stone Town

A UNESCO-listed Swahili town of carved doors, spice markets and narrow lanes.

Kilimanjaro

Africa's highest mountain. Climb it, or see it from a lodge in the foothills.

When to go

June to October for safari

January and February suit the southern Serengeti calving and Zanzibar's beaches. March to May is the long rainy season.

Who it suits

  • Safari and beach in one trip
  • Honeymoons with time to do nothing
  • Travellers who want a Muslim-majority coast
