Kenya

Big-sky safari, with the Indian Ocean a short flight away.

Why Kenya

Kenya is the easiest first safari. Nairobi has direct flights from major hubs in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, and the Maasai Mara is a short internal flight from there.

Add a few days on the coast and one trip gives you two very different halves: game drives at dawn, then sand and warm sea.

What to see

Maasai Mara

Lion, cheetah and elephant all year. From about July to October the wildebeest migration crosses the Mara River.

Amboseli

Large elephant herds with Kilimanjaro behind them on clear mornings.

Nairobi

The Giraffe Centre and the Sheldrick elephant orphanage, an easy half day before or after the bush.

Diani and Lamu

White beaches south of Mombasa, and Lamu's old Swahili town, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

When to go

July to October for the migration

January and February are also dry and quieter. April and May bring the long rains, and some camps close.

Who it suits
